“Hey Dr. K” – How Can I Treat a Burn and When Should I Call 911?

Spring, TX August 1, 2025: Harris County ESD 11 Mobile Healthcare Medical Director Dr. Jay Kovar explains in Harris County ESD 11’s monthly video series, “Hey Dr. K”, what kinds of burns are considered an emergency and how to treat the minor ones.

“There are almost half a million reported burns a year, and the most common place for them to happen is inside your own home, particularly the kitchen,” says Dr. Kovar.  “Skin damage starts at 107 degrees, the human body perceives pain at 117 degrees, and we make coffee at 200 degrees, leading to coffee being a major culprit in household burns. Burns can happen outside as well from motor vehicle side pipes, exhaust, and the sun.”

Dr. Kovar explains how to treat your first and second-degree burns and when to call 911 for an emergency assessment.

“Hey Dr. K” – What Kinds of Heat-Related Illnesses Are There and How Can I Protect Myself?

Spring, TX July 1, 2025: Summer is officially here, and the heat is upon us. Acclimating to our uniquely hot and humid temperatures can be particularly challenging for the very young, old, and medically vulnerable.  But hot weather can also sneak up on relatively healthy adults as well, leading to conditions as benign as swollen feet and heat rash, to as deadly as heat stroke.

This month, Harris County ESD 11 Mobile Healthcare Medical Director Dr. Jay Kovar is asked by teens participating in a summer lunch and learn program what they need to know about heat-related illnesses and how to protect themselves this summer.

“There are about 7,000 emergency visits a year due to heat-related illness and about 700 deaths. Texas, California, and Arizona lead the nation in the number of incidents,” says Dr. Kovar.

“People on medications for heart problems, diuretics, and mental health may also be particularly vulnerable to the summer heat.  Your body takes about two weeks through a hormonal process to get you ready for the summer temperatures, so take it easy on yourself when you go outside.  Wear loose clothing, hydrate, and when you feel dizzy or nauseous, immediately find a cool indoor space to retreat to.  It is a myth that you should gradually return to air-conditioned spaces after working in the heat. The best course of action if you get overheated is to immediately cool your body temperature down through any means available.”

Dr. Kovar also addresses the progression of heat injury, muscle weakness and spasms, cramping, and lightheadedness are all indicators that your body’s core temperature is reaching dangerous levels.  It is a very short window from heat exhaustion to heat stroke.  Know the signs and know what to do to protect yourself.

Houston’s Fox 26 Morning News Interviews Harris County ESD 11 About How to Pre-Prepare for Medical Emergencies During Hurricane Season

Houston, TX. June 16, 2025: Harris County ESD 11 Mobile Healthcare’s Chief Operating Officer Kevin Nutt was the incident commander during two devastating back-to-back storms last July, “Hurricane Beryl and the straight-line wind storm, the Derecho, wiped out trees, power, and left large numbers of the medically fragile without Oxygen, access to Dialysis clinics and crucial medication.  This year, we want to remind folks who depend on energy-consuming medical equipment and their caregivers to pre-prepare as much as possible for natural disasters,” says Nutt.

Recently, Fox Morning News reporter Ruben Dominguez interviewed Nutt live on the air at the Harris County ESD 11 deployment center about how best folks can prepare ahead of time.  Ruben asked what kinds of first aid items the medically dependent, their caregivers, and all of us should have prepared in our hurricane supply kits.

“I would recommend a quick trauma kit, some wound wash, some triangular bandages if you break an arm, some gauze, some quick clot, and a tourniquet to stop the bleed. We have some burn sheets because people could potentially get burned, and some cold packs. Cold packs are great for hematomas and small injuries like that.”

Harris County ESD 11 Mobile Healthcare Protecting Pets  by Outfitting All Ambulances with Pet Oxygen Masks

Spring, TX June 2, 2025: Cooking is the number one cause of house fires in Harris County, and it is estimated that in thousands of these fires reported each year, an animal is living in the home when the fire begins.  Often, these animals are difficult to locate after a fire breaks out, as they often hide underneath beds or in closets.  Many pets don’t know how to escape a burning structure safely, so they inhale more smoke than humans, which often leads to their deaths.

“That’s why specially designed pet Oxygen masks are essential tools in rescue efforts,” says Jordan Anderson, Interim CEO at Harris County ESD 11.  “Without these masks specifically designed for the faces of cats and dogs delivering lifesaving Oxygen to animals exposed to smoke inhalation, people could lose treasured members of their family.”

It is estimated that 66% of U.S. households own at least one pet. That equates to 86.9 million pets (minimum) that deserve lifesaving Oxygen in the event of a home fire or catastrophe.

Austin, Texas – May 27, 2025 – Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announces Harris County ESD 11 is the latest local government entity to achieve a Transparency Star as recognition of excellence in Traditional Finances.

Transparency Stars recognizes local government entities that provide easy online access to important financial data. The Comptroller’s office launched the Transparency Stars program in March 2016 to recognize cities, counties, and school districts making important strides toward greater government transparency.

“Harris County ESD 11 has shown a continued commitment to providing taxpayers with a clear and meaningful analysis of its financial data. Harris County ESD 11 Chief Financial Officer Tony Farmer says recognition like this for the District’s continuing efforts to provide clear, accountable, and transparent information about how taxpayer money is being spent is satisfying.

“It’s not enough to spend money wisely,” says Farmer. “It’s about making it easy for community members to stay informed about where their money is going. This collaboration allows us to take care of the public while also remaining accountable.”

“Hey Dr. K” – What Can I Do to Protect Myself and My Kids from Snakebites This Summer?

Spring, TX May 27, 2025:  It’s officially summer, the kids are out of school and looking for things to do.  One of the most popular activities on hot sunny days is to go exploring in the woods, neighborhood walkways and bodies of water.  This is unfortunately also a popular place for snakes to take refuge from brutal Texas heat.

This month Harris County ESD 11 Mobile Healthcare Medical Director Dr. Jay Kovar is asked by Spring resident and business owner Joe Morris what parents need to know about the kinds of snakes they can encounter in Southeast Texas,  how to avoid them and what to do if you or someone close to you experiences a venomous bite.

“Summer snakebites are not uncommon calls for us here at Harris County ESD 11 EMS,” says Dr. Kovar.  “I am joined this month by preeminent snake specialist Dr. Spencer Greene, himself an emergency director of toxicology at HCA Houston Healthcare – Kingwood. Dr. Greene explains the kinds of snakes to look out for in our area, how to stay safe from bites and what to do if you do experience a snake bite.”

Dr. Kovar is here to answer your questions as well, just call 281-524-7660 for more information. As always, if you are experiencing an emergency, remember to call 911.

“Hey Dr. K” – What Do I Need to Know About Drowning And Water Safety This Summer?

Spring, TX April 28, 2025: Summer is right around the corner and with the heat comes the inescapable lure of water and the danger of drowning. Pool safety is important but many people don’t consider bathtubs, buckets, and toilets as just as just as much of a threat, but they should.

This month Harris County ESD 11 Mobile Healthcare Medical Director Dr. Jay Kovar is asked by the D. Bradley McWilliams Cypress Creek YMCA to share what we need to know about drowning prevention and water safety.

“Drowning is the aspiration of water into the lungs that impedes our ability to get Oxygen into our system and into our brains and that results in neurologic injury and cardiac arrest,” says Dr. Kovar.

“Almost 80% of the drownings in the United States are male, a third of those are children and a third of those are fatal and a third of those have some serious neurological impairments if they should survive.”

Dr. Kovar also addresses different kinds of drowning dangers, what bystanders should do when they encounter a drowning victim, when to call an ambulance and what to expect when medics arrive. Learn how drowning can cause serious neurological damage and in what age groups certain kinds of drowning are most common. Most importantly, watch and learn how you can prevent drowning from happening at all.
