Spring, TX June 2, 2025: Cooking is the number one cause of house fires in Harris County, and it is estimated that in thousands of these fires reported each year, an animal is living in the home when the fire begins.  Often, these animals are difficult to locate after a fire breaks out, as they often hide underneath beds or in closets.  Many pets don’t know how to escape a burning structure safely, so they inhale more smoke than humans, which often leads to their deaths.  

“That’s why specially designed pet Oxygen masks are essential tools in rescue efforts,” says Jordan Anderson, Interim CEO at Harris County ESD 11.  “Without these masks specifically designed for the faces of cats and dogs delivering lifesaving Oxygen to animals exposed to smoke inhalation, people could lose treasured members of their family.” 

It is estimated that 66% of U.S. households own at least one pet. That equates to 86.9 million pets (minimum) that deserve lifesaving Oxygen in the event of a home fire or catastrophe.
